El GENCON cuenta actualmente con dos líneas principales de investigación:
1- Aplicación de análisis genéticos en el estudio y conservación de los mamíferos argentinos
Con este objetivo desarrollamos e implementamos proyectos que:
- Documenten la diversidad genética y la distribución de la variabilidad genética entre individuos, poblaciones y especies.
- Expliquen como el paisaje y las características ambientales influencian procesos microevolutivos y dinámicas metapoblacionales, incluyendo flujo genético (conectividad) y selección (adaptaciones locales).
- Provean información genética que junto a otras líneas de evidencia (características morfológicas y comportamentales) puedan ser utilizadas para identificar y delimitar límites taxonómicos (especies y subespecies).
2- Efectos de técnicas convencionales e innovadoras de preparación y conservación de material biológico de mamíferos sobre sus características morfohistológicas y la calidad del ADN.
Con este fin desarrollamos e implementamos estudios que:
- Evalúen las características morfológicas, histológicas y calidad de ADN en complejos músculo-esqueléticos y órganos de mamíferos obtenidos por plastinación.
- Analicen efectos temporales de distintos métodos de conservación de pieles y huesos mayormente empleados en las colecciones biológicas de mamíferos sobre la calidad y cantidad del ADN recuperado.
